Design Manager – International

About

Our client is a well-established brand with over 30 years’ experience within the retail sports industry. Having experienced rapid growth in the past 12 months, they now have a strong Global presence.

Now looking for a Design Manager, the successful applicant be responsible for driving innovation and design excellence across all assigned markets, managing, directing and influencing a team of designers to deliver inspiring, commercial retail environments for our consumers whilst maximising profitability for the group.

Job Role

  • Execute regional design strategies to achieve market specific roll out objectives
  • Develop the creative vision to maximise the store design opportunities relevant to space whilst being sympathetic to the global DNA and design standards
  • Set clear guidelines for new and existing store standards appropriate to each market
  • Seek out opportunities to drive innovation and design excellence across teams
  • Attend site meetings as appropriate
  • Coordinate meetings between local and global teams to present store designs and obtain feedback and approval
  • Contribute to the wider design department management team through sharing best practice, ideas and suggestions observed and implemented within the international marketplace
  • You lead the creative direction of the store design, championing global standards and brand DNA
  • Partner with senior team leaders and cross functional teams to create store specific designs which align to the project brief, delivery time-lines and budget requirements
  • You build teams and harness strong working relationships at a local and global level
  • Support your direct reports with the design roll out programme, monitoring workload and deadlines to ensure we achieve business objectives whilst being time realistic
  • Lead regular catch-up calls and provide weekly reports and re-caps to ensure your field based teams are delivering in line with requirements and best practice
  • Support the senior leadership, store and operational teams by participating and contributing in planning and development meetings, providing expert technical advice relating to store fit out and construction
  • Build solid relationships with the Property department, space planning, retail and all store delivery teams from inception of the project through to completion and close out
  • Set, maintain and communicate the standards of excellence and global design requirements to deliver best in class retail stores
  • Promote yourself as the single point of contact for all international design related issues
  • Oversee your direct reports training requirements, educating and developing a team to deliver results in-line with global standards. This includes monitoring individuals and assessing team member’s performance, recognising their development needs and opportunities to grow

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years industry experience, 5 of which managing a design team, working to and meeting business critical deadlines
  • Proven and demonstrable experience at all stages of the design process, from conception through to implementation and delivery
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of the retail design industry including industry trends and brands
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of a retail business and how it operates
  • Ability to write, read, review, analyse and interpret technical documents from landlord specifications to design documents
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to analyse business / trade documents and use them in wider context of store design and project delivery
  • Ability to adapt and react quickly in a rapidly changing environment with ability to blend priorities with deadlines and design objectives
  • Strong time management skills with ability to manage multiple design projects simultaneously
  • Excellent decision maker who leads from front, unafraid to make tough decisions
  • Strong presentation, communication & influencing skills; you will have the ability to communicate and influence across wide stakeholders groups at varying levels of seniority
  • Be prepared to travel to (but not exclusively) North America, Australia and Southeast Asia
  • Be skilled in AutoCAD, SketchUp and Photoshop
  • Degree in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Interior Design or other relevant qualification
  • Practical experience within the design/architecture sector is required
