About

Our client is a leading international retail interiors organisation that offers unique shop fitting solutions to retailers all over the world. With offices in over 20 countries and a strong history, they have positioned themselves as the market leaders. They partner with some of the largest blue-chip clients across the Grocery, Home Improvements, Consumer Electronics, Fashion, Cafés and Health & Beauty sectors.

As a Design Engineer, you will transform a creative brief or concept sketches into fully engineered solutions. Providing technical development and a set of highly accurate specifications and technical drawings. Projects will be centered around the design for manufacture of Retail Display equipment (such as shelving systems, retail furniture and freestanding displays). Materials and disciplines at your disposal will likely include metalwork, timber, plastics, glass or any other material you see fit for purpose.

Job Role

  • Use SolidWorks 3D CAD to produce technical piece-part, assembly and GA drawings for retail display equipment, in line with company design standards, CDM compliance and regulations
  • Manage CAD files and the design workflow, ensuring strict revision control within the PDM Vault environment
  • Catalogue and maintain design files to meet operational and manufacturing requirements
  • Create and maintain accurate Bills of Materials and engineering release documentation
  • Function check prototypes, supplier samples and first-off products
  • Value engineer new and existing designs to identify cost-saving opportunities while maintaining quality and manufacturability
  • Assess designs for suitability within the intended manufacturing environment
  • Participate in and lead structural load testing where required
  • Assess the structural integrity of designs in collaboration with the Development Manager
  • Support the creation of risk assessments, load test documentation, O&M manuals and assembly/install guides, following agreed templates and processes
  • Support engineering change management and non-conformance processes
  • Assist with costing exercises, tender support and feasibility reviews
  • Conduct site visits and surveys to assess retail display equipment in the field, both in the UK and internationally as required
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Manufacturing, Procurement and Suppliers to support project delivery
  • Actively contribute to continuous improvement, CAD standardisation and the adoption of new technologies

Skills and Experience

  • Degree qualified in Product Design, Engineering or a related technical discipline, with a minimum of 1 year’s post-graduate industry experience
  • Proven experience working in a manufacturing or equipment design environment, ideally with an on-site factory
  • Proficient in SolidWorks (essential) and comfortable working within a PDM Vault system (preferred)
  • Experience designing retail display equipment using materials such as metal, wood, plastics and glass
  • Strong understanding of design for manufacture, cost awareness and value engineering
  • Organised and methodical with excellent attention to detail
  • Confident communicator, able to articulate design intent clearly to colleagues across design, factory and commercial teams
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive, solutions-focused mindset
  • Able to manage multiple tasks, reassess priorities and work calmly under pressure
  • Self-motivated, adaptable and eager to improve working methods and technical capability
  • Comfortable working within a small team and engaging professionally with stakeholders at all levels
  • Full, clean driving licence with willingness to travel for site visits and project support
